I could have done 10 quotes from TERMINATOR |
In space no one can hear you scream . . .but in blogland they can. Why not sign up and on the 6th February count down your top ten horror/science fiction movie quotes? Do ten for each, a mixture, or just one category. It's up to you!
This has been a busy weekend, and the busy keeps on coming because I'm supposed to be improving my hook and pitch for Brenda Drakes - Dark and Stormy Blogfest Contest but I've just finished a SF MG and started to experiment with SF adult too so it would rude not submerge myself in Sci-fi and find my favourite quotes.
Listen, and understand. That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead. ~ Kyle Reese Terminator
Step up to red alert.
Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb. ~ Rimmer & Kryten, Red Dwarf
Ready are you? What know you of ready? For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh. Excitement. Heh. A Jedi craves not these things. You are reckless. ~ Yoda Empire Strikes Back
Only when we have to fight to stay human do we realise how precious it is. How dear to us. ~ Dr Miles Bennell, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.~ Morpheus The Matrix
The universe is composed of infinite planes of the random. ~ John Wyndham's Random Quest
I've staked my crew's life on the theory that you're a person, actual and whole, and if I'm wrong, you'd best shoot me now... [River cocks the gun she is pointing at Mal] Or, we could talk some more. ~ Captain Mal Reynolds Serenity
Spaceships are for acrobats who are also mathematicians. ~ Juan Rico in Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers
Science ain't an exact science with these clowns but, they're getting better. ~ Louie Twelve Monkeys
You know the way I always wanted to save the planet? [tosses empty coke can into recycle bin] Here's my chance. ~ David Levinson Independence Day
Anyway, it took time, effort and a great deal of procrastination to fine tune the world of great Sci-fi down to ten quotes and then try to priorities them. I think they are in 1 to 10 order.
This is the pitch for ENCOUNTERS an MG/YA SF adventure
When the counter-intelligence operatives of MI 8 came to pick twelve year-old, Thursday's brain, they brought a scalpel and an hermetically sealed room.

HOOK LINE - help needed:
serious contender:
serious contender:
It wasn't her life that flashed before her eyes, it was an alternate reality: she imagined the house with foundations not wheels, parents who worked as accountants, and salty pink slices of death in thin white sandwiches. It was the brakes that screamed.
or, the original
She imagined the house with foundations not wheels, parents who worked as accountants, and salty pink slices of death in thin white sandwiches, only the brake discs screeched.
OK, the latest

OK, the latest
She imagined the house with foundations not wheels, parents who worked as accountants, and salty pink slices of death in thin white sandwiches. In the cream and maroon van, converted into a home, they swerved across the white lines painted down the centre of the road. Really, they had no choice: a wall of rock; the petrol tanker lying more like a victim than an assassin or the drop to the wide river.
The blurb:
In ENCOUNTERS, twelve-year-olds, Thursday and Ethan learn who they are and what they aren’t – what it means to be human – when one of them is suspected of being alien and the other is... not from around here.

Great selection of quotes. I didn't do that blogfest because my memory doesn't work well enough for me to come up with quotes that I liked. It's nice to be reminded of some of them.
ReplyDeletegreat quotes and I find the premise of your story interesting :)
ReplyDeleteHi Tony
ReplyDeleteI played internet hunt for many - The Terminator quotes, from all the movies, I can do from my vast store of I-watch-those-films-too-often ;)
Hi Marcy
Thank you *blushes I've got my fingers tied so tightly it is slowing down my typing ;)
The last one about one being human and the other not caught my interest. The first two with the foundation vs. wheels didn't grab me as much.
ReplyDeleteGreat quotes.
Love the quotes! I picked a Morpheus quote too and one from Return of the Jedi- it's almost impossible not to pick Star Wars, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteon your Hook Line: I liked your first choice the best although I am not sure you need "It wasn't her life but an alternate reality..."?? The line "salty pink slices of death in thin white sandwiches" is quite nice!!
Serenity seems to be the most popular!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I adore Terminator too (the entire franchise) - just watched T2 yesterday. And I totally forgot about Twelve Monkeys!
ReplyDeleteIt's just impossible to narrow this list to 10!
Hi M.Pax
ReplyDeleteThe last is the blurb. The hook is the first line of the story - it was suggested I couldn't get away with my first line unless I explained it was an alternate reality. It doesn't feel too uncomfortable seeing it there.
Hi Danette
I'm glad you said that because the original doesn't have it. :)
Hi Alex
Funny! I HATED Serenity on TV for about the first 8 episodes. By the time I realised I loved it they had dropped it; I've missed it ever since. I'm happy to re-watch it, every time it's on. :)
These are some scary quotes Elaine. Thanks for stopping over on my blog and sharing the Neruda quote (a little different from these ones...!) it made me swoon!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Several new ones that I'll have to check out.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the first hook line, although I have to say that the brake disc part throws me off from all of them. I think you should try it without that and it'll have a little more impact.
I'm happy Serenity is getting so much face time on this fest!
ReplyDeleteI think your pitch looks good, but I was thrown off by the dashes. I would figure out how to change them into commas, or new sentences.
Good list! - Nice to see Red Dwarf on it.
ReplyDeleteRe your blurb - I like the original one best, but like Witless Exposition above I don't understand the brake disc bit. Good luck with it!
Such a great list, another one glad to see Red Dwarf made someones.
ReplyDeleteAwesome list of quotes! Serenty (and Night of the Living Dead) were the most popular. Thank you for taking part!
ReplyDeletegreat quote. That is a great interaction between Mal and river.
ReplyDeleteGreat quotes. The Matrix one is really good.
ReplyDeleteAs far as your story, it's the blurb that got my total interest. I'm fascinated reading that. As far as the hook, I'm with some of the others in that I got lost on the brake disc part.
I'm a big fan of the Terminator movies. Haven't seen the most recent one yet, but I have never been disappointed with any of the others. Nice selection of quotes here.

Tossing It Out and the Blogging From A to Z April Challenge 2011
I think I could make a whole list of quotes just from Serenity - your quotes are awesome!!
ReplyDeleteMy mind went blank for some reason on the movie quotes; which is why I chose books. I've been reading a lot of my favorites though.
ReplyDeleteI like your hook.
.....dhole
Such a great list. 12 Monkeys, another gem that I missed in my rush to get my list together!
ReplyDeleteHi Katie
ReplyDeleteNeruda has a way with words - my father wrote love poetry but not quite to his standard.
Hi WE.
I'll experiment without the clever - it never pays to be too clever, apparently ;)
Hi Abby
I love Serenity - I was so shocked when Wash died - Leaf on the breeze :( I'll see how the commas look instead of the dashes.
Hello BBiro and Dempsey
Red Dwarf was so funny. Clever and deep but very funny with it :)
I'm feeling the anti-break discs locking, as a device is not working ;)
Hi Ellie
I love Serenity although NotLD scared we witless - I have trouble with gore.
Hi Budd
I laughed so loud the first time I saw that part. The Serenity quote and The Terminator are my favourites.
Hi Kimberley
It was hard deciding which Matrix quote summed up the the whole concept as well.
Thanks for your thoughts on the Hook. I'm glad the Blurb make a big impression :)
Hi Lee
The Terminator original is superb but I love them all really. I'm sorted for the Alphabet Blog series I have two ideas for linking the blogposts already :)
Hi Jemi
Me, too! Serenity, the series and the movie, as chock-full of quotable nuggets of genius;)
Hi Donna
The movies are so bright and shiny ;) The quotable words stand out usually it is the images that do the talking in a movie. when it's the dialogue, it really stays with you.
Hi Renee
12 Monkeys was a monster Sci-fi movie, clever too. I loved it.
Thanks to everyone who commented, especially with suggestions on improving the Hook for my new MG, ENCOUNTERS. :)
Probably my two favorite sci-fi movies are T2 and Gattaca, though of course I could quote from almost every Star Wars movie :)
ReplyDeleteI think I like your serious contender the best. And btw, Encounters is a fabulous title!
12 monkeys... brilliant and awesome tale!
ReplyDeleteThank you for being part of this, it was a great time and success.

Ah! Invasion of the body snatches! I'd almost forgotten that one and I loved it!
ReplyDeleteSerenity and Independence Day! Two of my favorites. Great list!
ReplyDeleteHi Sherrie
ReplyDeleteThey are wonderful sci-fi films. I love T1, and 2 as well ;)
Thanks for your vote on the Serious contender hook and for saying ENCOUNTERS is quite the title ;)
Hi Jeremy
12 Monkeys was one of the few films where I didn't see the ending coming, until it was too late.
Hi Lindsay
You have to watch it through dust mites, and you can smell that ancient grey mothballs odour, but it is a classic ;)
Hi Heather
Serenity has the verbal humour, where Independence Day has the visual, but both movies are great. :)
Great quotes! I hope you didn't spend too much time searching the internet for all of them. That can be so time consuming!!
ReplyDeletexoxo, The BooKrushers.
Kimberley if I wasn't raking the internet it would be one indication that I was dead. ;)
ReplyDeleteI preferr the last entry on Encounters. I didn't really understand what the brakes screetching had to do with the rest of the paragraph.
ReplyDeleteBest Wishes on your entry.
Terminator is an awesome movie. I enjoyed all of your quotes, and thanks for that cute picture of Mr. Weasley over there.
