TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE by TESSA DARE ( A Rogue Regency)

When he is obliged to return to his family home in widest Devonshire, war hero, Rhys St. Maur, is certain his damnable good luck has again found a way to torment and punish him.
Believing in the importance of hard work and determination, innkeeper, widow, Meredith Maddox, is pragmatic and yet – when faced with scarred and damaged Rhys St. Maur -  she trusts everything on the outcome of the wager her heart placed long ago.

DONALD MAASS WRITE TIP #69

What’s your story type?  What in it will fans of this story type hate?  Say that louder. Make it impossible to miss.

There was no way in Creation that he meant to propose marriage to her after a single night at the Three Hounds. Her accommodations were nice, but not that nice.

I am not a regular reader of historical romance – I particularly avoid Regency titles – so this seemed like a great book choice to read and think about a story tropes, or types, and find a book that says it loudly. But does it well.

Tessa Dare has written the essence of the Regency Romance. She made the hero able and the heroine more than willing. I shivered at the burned-out shell of the old Hall and picked my way through the mists avoiding smugglers. I also came to love Rhys, he is a great character, in serious need of being made to feel he is loved and valued. And, Meredith is a strong and determined woman. Together – that is my favourite combination.

WHAT BOOK THAT YOU READ SURPRISED YOU?

I am catching up on things that have been biding their time on my TBR pile. This week I am reading CROSSED, the second book in Ally Condie’s series. I loved the first book MATCHED. It comes as no surprise to me that I am enjoying the beautifully written prose.
In Crossed, unlike everyone else, Cassia longs to be sent to the outer provinces. She believes Ky, the boy she loves, was sent there. This book was written in alternating points of view. Personally, I love knowing what is going on in the male MC’s head too.

CROSSED

Chapter 12 page 118

“The silence stretches on as I look up and realise that even this limited bit of sky holds more stars than I was ever able to catch sight of in the Borough. For some reason, this gives me hope that there is much else I don’t see.”

I THINK THE STARS ARE A SOURCE OF ENDLESS HOPE. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN YOU LOOK AT A SKY FULL OF STARS?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING? I NEED A RECOMMENDATION

THURSDAY STYLE
Thursday and Tuesday have many similarities, they are both days of the week, they both start with letter T,  and I'm supposed to post on them.
I was all set to hit post on Tuesday but I was all-excited about the Man Utd game that didn't go the way I hoped it was destined to go. Now, I hate football... and I will until Saturday's fixture against West Ham. I also follow the cricket, England were trying to play in New Zealand - I think it's a shame the Kiwi team didn't let them have a proper turn, so far. This has not been a good week.

Thank goodness for reading and writing - I like both of them.

Once is about a boy called Felix.

Once it was 1942, and Felix had to pretend he was a catholic orphan when in fact he was Jewish – and a little confused at how much the world he knew was changing.

Once is a harrowing and emotional tale about a hopeful, if naïve, little boy.

Once Felix couldn’t imagine the depths of evil that shadowed the world but, well, it never entered his head that what he was experiencing was worse than a lot of misunderstandings.

pg 149 This is why Once was followed by Then

“You know when you jump off a moving train and  Nazis shoot at you with machine guns and you see sharp tree trunks coming at you and then you hit the ground so hard you feel like you’ve smashed your head open and bullets have gone through your chest and you don’t survive even though you prayed to God, Mary, the Pope and Richmal Compton?
That’s what happened to poor Chaya”

TEASER TUESDAY - I AM DAVID BY ANNE HOLM

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

I AM DAVID by Anne Holm

In my wip, Hal is an orphan who is kept by the Master of the Stable because he made himself useful caring for the horses.  In his past, there were disastrous consequences after a lie. Hal has promised himself he will never tell another lie. Now he is being tested, Hal finds the difference between being only truthful and actively telling a lie is a great grey mire and he constantly has to wade through it keeping on firm-ish ground. He is observant, loyal, and kind in the face of provocation.

At this point in the narrative, with his friends, Hal is making an arduous journey across the country.

Something about Hal's character and his travels kept making me think about David – from “I am David” by Anne Holm. I had to find my old copy of this book and re-read it. No matter how he's challenged, David remains kind, honest and brave. Now I have finished reading this- and cried, again - I've realised that Anne Holm is a master of show and tell. She shows David’s strengths by providing examples of how other characters think and act under similar pressures. Although this book has been around like-forever - first published in 1963 - reading it was the first time I became aware of the character's voice in the narrative.

David set his foot in a gap higher up the barbed wire...When would the searchlight come? They could not be certain of hitting him in the dark...and if they did not hurry, he would be over...Why didn't they hurry up.

The character in my wip would describe himself as observant, friendly and careful.

HOW WOULD YOUR MC DESCRIBE THEMSELVES?

TEASER TUESDAY - THE WORLD OF NORM - The funny side of self-absorbed

Image from
Hatchett Children's Books
The World of Norm: May Contain Nuts, opens with Norm, in his new house, about to pee in his Dad's wardrobe.
(Some people might think that’s too unlikely: to walk, on autopilot, the route to where the toilet was in the old house. Well, I survived a similar experience when I took Cub Scouts on camp. I found a sleepy boy in the space where his home-toilet would have been and you don’t want to know what he peed on!)

Life, according to Norm, is `just so unfair'. He has two annoying younger brothers. And he’s broke. This book is about Norm's quest to “pimp” his ride: which, sadly, is the two-wheeled kind-of ride. He is a boy with a bike, and a mission.

“Are you going to help, Norman, or am I going to have to unload the car all by myself?” said Norman’s Dad, standing in the doorway, holding a carrier bag dripping something sticky all over the floor.
“Well, if you wouldn’t mind,” said Norman immediately starting to text back.

The World of Norm is a blend of selfishness, stupidity and hopeful desperation. The author, Jonathan Meres, makes this world very funny – silly – but believable too.

THESE SENTENCES STRUCK ME AS VERY FAMILIAR. DO YOU FIND THE PING OF THE TEXT MESSAGE INTERRUPTS TOO MUCH OF YOUR DAY?
